Instagraming March!

Hello!

Apparently, March turned into April ten days ago. You’d never know it by how cold it’s been lately. It’s still below zero most days. Sigh.

Anyway, here’s what I was up to in March:

Instagraming February!

Hello hello!

I’m so happy that March is finally here. Although we’re expected some snow today, it still feels like the end of winter is near. This weekend, I’m trying to get my receipts in order to do my taxes (ugh) and I’m going to watch some curling tonight.

Anyway, here’s what I was up to in February:

What I’m Going to Miss About My Neighbourhood: #7 Le Croissant

Hi all!

I’m so behind on this series! I moved over a month ago already.

7. Le Croissant

{Le Croissant}

Without a doubt, one of the places I’m going to miss the most is Le Croissant. This little bakery makes the absolutely best croissants in Winnipeg. One of my favourite things to do was to wake up and walk the 20 or so minutes to the bakery to pick up a croissant for an am break. If you haven’t been there already, you really have to go. Just get there early to make sure there’s a bit of a selection. I personally love the selection of fruit croissants that arrive in the summer.

What I’m Going to Miss About My Neighbourhood: #8 Le Garage Cafe!

Hi all!

It has been such a lousy couple of weeks for me. I was ill, then I was trying to move in 40C weather and I’ve just finished with a bout of teeth grinding. Just bad news bears all around. So behind in my posts!

8. Le Garage Cafe!

{Le Garage Cafe}

When I was younger, there seemed to be a lot more restaurants on Provencher Blvd than there is currently. More importantly, there seemed to be more places that had fantastic poutine. However, when I moved there I couldn’t seem to find what I was looking for. Fortunately, Le Garage Cafe has fantastic poutine and features great live music. It’s one of the places I know I’ll be meeting people for lunch when I head over to that end of the city.

{My favourite veggie burger & poutine}

If you’re looking for a place to hear such great live music and meal, check out Le Garage Cafe next time you’re in St. B!

Check out #10 and #9.

Ready for the Weekend : February 24 Edition

Today completely flew by! I accomplished a lot although not as much as I’d hope. Still feelng very productive though! Aren’t those the best Fridays? We’ve had a few days of snow here so I have a feeling I’ll be holed up all weekend if it keeps up. Sometimes, it’s just nice to be all warm and cozy indoors with some tea and a book than head out, clear off your car while covering yourself in snow in the process. But hey, that’s just me.

In other news, I really can’t get this song out of my head. It’s not a new song but it popped in yesterday afternoon and it keeps spinning around in there. I love Lily Allen. I can’t wait until she releases new music even though I’m sure it’ll be awhile.

1.  Cooking something stodgy
I’m not sure if it’ll be veggie chili or a shepherdess pie but I want to make something warm and filling that’ll last me until Monday.

2.  Cleaning my bedroom
I keep the claddagh ring I got in Ireland on my desk when I’m not using it. Usually, I stick it on the end of a bottle of nail polish. Yesterday, I knocked the nail polish bottle off the desk and the ring flew off into a pile of work boxes and papers. I couldn’t find it and it’s stressing me out. I know it’s here somewhere. I think I have to take it as a sign to get organized.

3.  Finishing my taxes
What an exciting life I lead! I’m just waiting on one more form which I should get today or tomorrow. I really enjoy finishing my taxes early and getting them off my plate. Thank god for those computer programs. Easy peasy.

4. Purchasing a laundry basket
Mine is broken and it’s more of a hindrance than a help at this point.

5. Avoiding the Oscars
I used to be all over the Oscars and all award shows in general. I really did. One day, (I must have been particularly bitter), I just snapped and I couldn’t take it anymore. Everything about them irritates me now. Maybe I take it too seriously and get disappointed. Maybe it’s because I’m haven’t been attached to any of the films nominated in the past couple of years. I really don’t know. Anyway, so chances are I won’t be watching or will just be flipping back and forth. I will say that there are two parts of the Oscars I genuinely really love – the red carpet & movie montages. I LOVE MONTAGES! You know, when they’ll have two minutes on Film Noir or Westerns or whatever they want to showcase this year. I really think that’s the best part of it. That’s the wonderful thing about the blogging world. I know that I’ll be able to see all the fashions online and if anything interesting or funny occurs, I know it’ll be on ONTD by the end of the night. Perfect!

What are your plans for the weekend?

Ready for the Weekend!

I’m so excited for this weekend! I don’t have a lot on but I’m so looking forward to everything I’ve got planned:

1. Sunday Brunch with the girls
It’s been at least a year since I had brunch with my best friends. Our lives just got too busy and chaotic. It’s not like we haven’t seen each other but there’s no better way to catch up than over a girly brunch.

2.  Finishing my pillow

3. Reading our book club book for this month
Our current selection is Heaven is for Real. I have to have it done by Wednesday! Not something I would usually pick up but that’s the best thing about being part of a book club.

4. Using my new drill
I had plans to use it earlier this week but I didn’t have the right bits. 😦 I’ve found the right ones now though so I just have to pick them up and I’m good to go! 5. Returning to hot yoga
I haven’t been in two years. Yikes! I’m really looking forward to getting back into it.

What are your plans for the weekend?

12 Things for this December!

Footprints
Overnight, the temperature dipped down to -31C. It’s official, winter is here! It hasn’t really felt like December yet because we’ve barely had any snow and the weather has been much warmer than usual. In Winnipeg, the cold weather can bring you down but the truth is you have to move on with your life. Sure, there’ll be those cozy days when you just want to experience the weather only through the window. Today, was one of those days but here are the things I’m looking forward to this December:

1. Baking!!
Last year, I had some dental issues so I could barely function, let alone eat anything. As a result, I didn’t do any Christmas baking. It was so depressing. I’m so looking forward to it this year.  🙂

 2. Ugly Sweater Party!
My bff is hosting a Christmas themed ugly sweater party. I’ve found on at Value Village and I think it’s given me a case of Stockholm Syndrome. I’m not quite sure it’s ugly enough anymore.

3. Massage at Ten Spa.
I’ve always been a bit intimidated by Ten Spa as it’s arguably our fanciest spa in Winnipeg. I’ve booked a massage though for the week before Christmas. Very excited to check it out.

4. Shopping on Osbourne, Corydon & Academy
I love checking out the shops in these areas but I don’t often make the effort to do so. It’s perfect during the holidays though as the unique boutiques offer things you can’t find in a typical mall. Plus, I love getting all cold and then heading into the Second Cup on River &  Osbourne to relax, warm up and people watch.

5. Reading Dickens’ A Christmas Carol
I haven’t read since I was in high school. So glad our book club picked it for this month!

6. Watching Love Actually many, many times.
I just love this movie so much. It’s so rare to find a rom com that doesn’t annoy me and to have an ensemble cast that keeps it together. The American subplot is always a bit strange but I think they added it in to balance out the more heartbreaking storylines. How can you not love it?

8.  Ab Fab Christmas Special!

9. Christmas Cards
I absolutely love sending Christmas cards out to all my friends around the country and across the globe. I’m such a nerd that way. That reminds me, I better get started!

10. A New Winter Coat
Long, long overdue.

11. Rosetta Stone Italiano!
I ordered it on Cyber Monday. Now I’m super excited to get started. Have you tried their demo!? It’s unbelievable.

12. Taking the last two weeks of December to fit in all the above!!

What are you looking forward to most this December?

Pretty Eats: Banff

I can’t believe I haven’t posted this yet! I’m so behind!! Unlike Kelowna, Banff is very familiar to me. For 4 years (on and off), I lived in the neighbouring village of Lake Louise. It’s about 30 minutes away. Hereafter, anytime I refer to “living in the woods”, this is what I mean. Banff is incredibly popular and often, I would just drive past Banff to get to the more non-touristy Canmore or Calgary.

Here’s some tips from a local:

Best Coffee: Evelyn’s Coffee hands down. It’s not hard to find one, there’s 3 locations in Banff and two are on the same street (Banff Ave). Great coffees and atmosphere. There is a Starbucks on Banff Ave as well if you’re wanting that but for a classic latte or cappuccino, Evelyn’s is superior. I love Starbucks but let’s face it, they’re not really known for their espresso. There is also a Tim Hortons in Banff as well. BIG NEWS FOR ME! I used to drive to Canmore if  I got a timmies craving. Now one is located a little out of the way, in the Brewter Bus Station.

Best Breakfast: Wild Flour Bakery Cafe
Their breakfast menu isn’t the longest but it doesn’t need to be. For something quick and delicious, look no further. They make all their own breads and all coffee is organic and fair trade. What’s not to love? Check out my latte and breakfast sandwich. Yum! I wish I could click my fingers and make it reappear!
DSC01282

I should note that of course the Best Breakfast / Brunch of all time would be at the Banff Springs Hotel. However, if you hit up that buffet, you better not make any plans. It will destroy you…in a good way! 😉

Best Snack:  Beavertails!

This is also a new place since I lived in the woods. We don’t even have beavertails in Winnipeg anymore. I so miss them! Don’t worry! It’s not an actual beaver’s tail. Just a fabulous pastry with some cinnamon and sugar.

Best Dinner: Nourish

This was a fantastic surprise for me! Nourish is a fairly new vegetarian restaurant that just opened up in the Bear Street Mall. I told my friends that just because I’m a vegetarian, doesn’t mean we have to eat at a vegetarian restaurant but they were so excited. It turns out that anytime anyone visits them in Banff, they take them to Nourish. It’s just that good. At Nourish, everything is served Tapas style so be prepared to share!

First up, nachos! But these are unlike any nachos I’ve ever seen. There are over 27 toppings! I would never have thought to throw strawberries on nachos but they did and it works! Sorry for the fuzzy photos! It was so dark in there.

King Kong Noodles – The overwhelming favourite:

Shepherd’s Pie: I really have to get on making a veggie version this Fall. I really miss it!
DSC01281

I have to admit that I didn’t just eat! I also, went for a 3 hour hike for a better look at the Banff Springs and the falls! Hurray for me. What a great way to spend the day in the rain. 🙂
