NOTD: Essie’s Mint Candy Apple & Friends

A few weeks ago, I finally saw Essie’s Mint Candy Apple in person. I’m not sure if it hadn’t been available in Canada before but I certainly hadn’t seen it and believe me I looked. After seeing it for the past year on many blogs, I was so happy to finally find it. Once I picked it up, I wondered if it was too similar to China Glaze’s For Audrey. I also thought of Mac’s Peppermint Patti which I also have. Before I used it, I wondered if they were too similar.

You can see that in the bottles China Glaze’s For Audrey and Essie’s Mint Candy Apple look very similar.

So I came up with this cute NOTD using all three to compare them better.

Clearly, I had nothing to worry about. Although similar while in the bottle, For Audrey dries to a darker turquoise/teal where Essie’s Mint Candy Apple stays a bright light blue. I really loved how these three worked together. I’m sure it won’t be the last time I do my nails like this.

February Favourites!

I love watching YouTube videos of people sharing their favourite beauty products. In February, I actually bought a few new products that I was obsessed with so I thought I’d join in on the fun. Generally, I buy a couple of things and like them enough to keep using them but not enough to advocate purchasing them. I can’t predict whether this will be a regular post just yet so we’ll play it by ear.

February began with me having very dry skin. You would think that dry skin would be more of an issue when it’s -40C and not when it’s hovering around -10C. However, my regular creams were no longer working. I should mention that I have combination to dry skin for comparison’s sake. Also, I get eczema on the palms of my hands and on my eyelids if I’m not paying attention so I’m worried about introducing new things because they can often make things worse. FYI – Vaseline (and the new Live Clean non-petroleum jelly) are the only things that work on my eyes when I have eczema so I generally just use that as a precaution.

Lush’s The Sacred Truth: $6.95 for 2.1 oz.

I decided to go to Lush and try a fresh face cream mask to help repair the dry skin. I ended up with The Sacred Truth which is made with wheatgrass, green tea and papaya. I really loved this! I felt a difference right away and I started using it 2-3 times a week all month. It is a slightly green colour and the mask has to be refridgerated. I see myself purchasing this again & again. I even think it’d be good in the summer to destress the skin after the heat and humidity sets in.

Lush’s Full of Grace Moisturizing Bar – $14.95 / 20g

While as I was at Lush, they mentioned that I should try the Full of Grace serum with the mask for maximum impact. Although Lush can be a bit full on with the recommendations, I decided to pick one up because although I love the idea of serums, I haven’t found one I loved yet. I really love this one. You hold it in between your hands for a few minutes so it melts and then rub on your face. I started using this before the masks and at night. Sometimes I would put moisturizer on top but most of the time I just used as is. It was thick enough to last all night. However, I wouldn’t wear as an am moisturizer. Also, the scent of this one is a little heavy. It reminds me of patcholi even though I’m not sure patcholi is even in it. The only downside is that it looks like it’s only lasting for about 6 weeks. I will purchase it again though.

Josie Maran’s 100% Pure Argan Oil – $18 / .5 oz

Literally the day after I purchased the above two products, I went to Sephora with my friends. I’ve been looking at Josie Maran’s oil for weeks and wondering about it. The thing is that it’s quite expensive so it’s hard to take the risk. The 1.7 oz bottle is $58. However, I kept hearing great things about it so I picked up the tiniest sample as a treat. Naturally, I loved it. It’s quite different to the Lush serum as it has no fragrance and it’s a lot thinner. I thought it was a good complement for the am. However, I had to reapply it in the am for the first couple of days. I wouldn’t wear it at night alone because it wouldn’t last. I would repurchase this for the quality but the price is holding me back. I’m interesting in some homemade olive oil options I’ve seen online. If you have any suggestions, let me know!

I have to say that using the above three products for 2 days made a huge difference in my skin. I could feel relief immediately from the Lush products and by the time I had all three in rotation, the dry spots on my skin disappeared.

Pretty Things: Happy Birthday Glossybox

Yesterday, I received my last Glossybox. It’s in celebration of their one year anniversary in Canada. It’s such a great box that I had to share it. I really love Glossybox. I’ve had a subscription for nearly a year and I wanted to try the new SeasonsBox. In a few months, who knows? I might resubscribe.

Here’s what I received:004
I love the normal pale pink boxes that Glossybox comes in. However, I love receiving this box. It’s very cute.
Clockwise from top left:
1. Anatomicals : You Need a Blooming Shower! – FULL SIZE!
Rose & Jasmine Body Cleanser – smells gorgeous!

2. Crabtree & Evelyn Tarocco Orange Eucalyptus & Sage Ultra-Moisturizing Hand Therapy Sachet

3. Biore Deep Cleansing Pore Strips – Ultra – FULL SIZE!

4. Essence Quattro Eyeshadow in Vamp it Up  – FULL SIZE!
Not sure about these colours. I have a couple of them and they’re more like fall colours in my mind but I loved getting it!

5. Givenchy Gloss Interdit No. 3 Coral Frenzy (3.5 mL)
I think this is the most luxe product I received from Glossybox so I was very excited!!008 009
6. Macadamia Natural Oil Healing Oil Treatment This is exactly what I’ve needed! I think that since we’re getting closer to spring (pleeassee!!), I’m started to notice that my hair is getting a bit dry. I’m very excited to try this.

7. Eucerin Hyal-Urea Anti-Wrinkle Day / Night Cream Sachet Duo Not really into this. I really don’t like using anything with urea.

8. Glossybox Cupcake Kit Seriously? How cute is this!? I will definitely be making cupcakes in the near future!

As far as I know, everything (except for the Eucerin sample) is cruelty-free. 🙂

I have enjoyed receiving Glossybox. Although the products included are mostly drugstore products, there are usually 2-3 full size products. Did you get anything different in your Glossybox? Let me know!

NOTD: Suncoat Peelable in Mulberry

I received this bottle of Suncoat Peelable nail polish in a Glymm box last month. The photo is true to real life. I’m always a bit wary of peelable nail polish. I find that one little scrap can take the whole nail off. This wasn’t the case with Suncoat. In fact, I was able to have a shower & wash the dishes and keep the polish on.

Of course, it didn’t last for as long as non peelable polish but I really liked this formula. I would definitely pick up a few more colours if I had an idea where to find them. It would be great for the really dark shades like red that seem to dye the area around my nails when I try to take it off with remover. Something to think about if you’re like me and often plan your polish changes a few days in advance. It is definitely the best peelable polish I’ve ever tried.

According to their website, the polish is “Completely VOC free. Free of toulene, formaldehyde (no formaldehyde donors), acetates, acetone or any other chemical solvents.” This particular colour is vegan. Suncoat is a Canadian company and their cosmetics are cruelty-free.

Pretty Things: The Crimson Amulet Collection by NYX

Hey lovelies!

Generally, I don’t talk about what I got in my beauty boxes because I haven’t tried them out yet but I was so excited about an item in this month’s Glossybox. Hope I’m not spoiling anything for you!

Imagine my surprise when I opened my box and saw this.

My first thought was that it was some cheesy promotional movie. lol. I don’t know why. I opened it up and I gasped! It’s a full on palette!

One side is eyeshadows

The other side contains blushes, a highlighter, eyeshadow base, liner and lip glosses!

Woo hoo!! I’m very excited to try this out so thank you to Glossybox & Nyx for putting this together.

The best part?

Needless to say I’m really excited to try these all out. These colours are perfect for fall! This is great for me because I really don’t have a lot of neutrals. Of course, I’m mostly drawn to the sparkly navy and jade shadows. 😉

What do you think of this palette?

Best of Beauty Boxes: June & July

Even though it’s been a few months, I finally finished trying a couple of products from June and July’s beauty boxes. Instead of just posting what I got in the boxes, I’m going to showcase my favourites.

June’s Glossybox was a bit disappointing. Even though it contained four full size products, everything in the box was a drugstore brand. Wow. That made me sound really snobby. lol Not that there aren’t some great drugstore brands, it’s just that I get the beauty boxes to introduce me to brands that are new to me. Anyway, the best part of this box was the full size Gillette Venus Embrace Razor ($13).

July’s Glossybox was an improvement and featured a full size Zoya nail polish in Shelby. It’s my first Zoya polish and I love it. I wore it a few times this summer. It’s the perfect hot pink!

Glymm’s July box (or should I say bag), had a couple of great products in it.

The La Fresh nail polish remover was FANTASTIC and the box contained two pads. As promised, one pad took all the polish off both hands. Just a note, that it removed a pale pink polish so I wonder if it would be different if it were dark polish. Has anyone tried it? What I also loved about it was the orange scent. It was a lot more pleasant than the typical chemical smell of regular nail polish remover. I would love to buy this but it’s a bit expensive. $9.99 for 20 pads. Not so bad but I wish they’d make it without the pads. I’d definitely buy. It’d be perfect for travelling which is what I’m saving the second pad.

My other favourite was Clark’s Botanicals Smoothing Marine Cream. It’s texture is smooth and feels like it’s thick and moisturizing but somehow spreads thin. This sample lasted TWO MONTHS!! It left my skin very soft and smooth. The only thing is it’s pretty expensive, $115 (50 mL) but it did last a long time so I would consider buying if it was on sale.

The great news is that all of these products are cruelty-free!

What’s your favourite product from a recent beauty box?

Pretty Things: May Glossybox!

Even though I’m well behind, here’s May’s Glossybox! It still completely made my day. I have yet to be disappointed with Glossybox.

Let’s get on with it, shall we?

1. Curel Foot Cream
Sample size: 100 ml / $3.99
It doesn’t say full size but it’s quite significant. It’s always nice to have a foot cream, particularly in the summer. It’s perfect for summer.  Smells lovely. I couldn’t find anything online stating whether it was a cruelty-free product but then I found another May Glossybox review and Sara had already contacted the company. Fantastic! Cruelty-free.

2. Simple Eye Make up Remover
Sample size: 56 ml
Full size: $9.99

Simple Facial Wash Gel
Sample size: 50 ml
Full size: $9.99

Simple cosmetics have really had a big marketing push behind them since coming to Canada. I was curious to try them when I first heard about them. On their UK website, they state that they are cruelty-free but their American & Canadian sites don’t say that. Something clearly didn’t translate when coming across the pond. To be honest, if I have to search and search to find out if a company is cruelty-free, chances are they’re not. It’s a great selling feature and it’s too bad not all companies don’t feel the same way. I think these will be saved up for a giveaway.

3.  boxx Cosmetics Cream Corrector in Melina
FULL SIZE!  Whoop! $24
I used to use one of these concealers all the time. I’m not sure you can tell from this hazy photo, but it’s a concealer that is tinted quite yellow to help mask dark circles. Love the texture of this. I’m not sure if they test on animals. I’ve sent a tweet and when I get a response I will update you.

boxx cosmetics

@boxxcosmetics @LesleyHere yes it is cruelty free. Thanks for asking!

4. Sebastian Professional Volupt Shampoo

FULL SIZE! 250 ml / $15.78
I’m not a fan of shampoos that are not biodegradable or sulfate free. However, it’s nice to get another full size product. Glossybox never disappoints on that score. The shampoo definitely smells like a spa shampoo. You know how they never really smell like the ocean or coconut, they usually have that spa smell?  Cruelty-free.

That’s it for now! Really excited to see what comes in this month’s Glossybox.

Did you get anything different in your Glossybox for May? Let me know!

Pretty Things: My Second Eco-Emi box!

Hello lovelies!

Remember when I said here that I was only going to receive one Eco Emi box? Turns out I was going to get two! Whoop! I was really excited about this to be honest. It felt like a bonus.

1. Baby Me Goat Milk Soap by Alabu Skin Care
Sample size: .5 oz
Full size: 3.25 oz $5.15 US

Vegetarian soap with no artificial colours or preservatives. I’m looking forward to this. I feel like it’s going to be really luxurious.

2. Seaweed Body Wash in Eucalyptus and Peppermint by The Seaweed Bath Company.
Sample size: 1 packet (unspecified)
Full size: 12 fl oz $16.89 US

Sounds expensive for a body wash!

3. Tropical Lime Tea by Mate Factor Tea
Sample size: 1 tea bag
Full size: 20 tea bags $5.99 US

I’m intrigued about the lime, hisbiscus and green yerba mate. It’s a nice treat to get tea in a beauty box!

4. Whipped Shea Butter with Kalabari Melon Seed Oil by Shea Radiance
Sample size: no weight given
Full size:  5 oz $34.00 US
This is a really luscious product! The whipped consistency makes it feel so soft and smooth. However, because of the oil, you don’t need as much as you think. Smells lovely.

5. Organic Raw Fair Trade Honey by Wholesome Sweeteners
Sample size: 1.5 oz
Full size: 1 pack 16.00 oz $7.99 US

I’m not the biggest honey fan. It kind of freaks me out. lol.  I think it’s because I only eat it when I’m sick. Lovely gesture though.

6. Lip Shimmer in Plum by Burts Bees
Full size! $5.00 US
I’m not really a fan of Burt’s Bees but I know so many of you are. I’ll save this for a giveaway. 🙂

7. Natural Toothpaste by Dr. Collins
Sample size: .75oz
Full size: 4.2 oz $6.75 US

It smells really nice! I’m going to place in my travel bag with my biodegradable toothbrush I got from the last Eco-Emi box.

8. Bronzer in Golden by Laruen Brooke Cosmetiques
Full size! $12 US

Gorgeous gold colour! So pretty! Completely made my day. 🙂 I promise to take a swatch at some point. I forgot when I originally took these photos and the light isn’t working out to well for me.

Also included were these Enchanting Chai LIne Gourmet Enhancers, Finishing Sugars and Spiced Chocolates from Catalyst Gourmet.
It’s a bit weird to receive food that’s not individually wrapped like a granola bar or something. I’m intrigued by these and they smell lovely. I’ll for sure try the finish sugars ($6 for 2 oz; $15 for 6.5 oz) and the enhancers ($7 for .25 oz; $16 for 1.5 oz) but the chocolate  ($8.50 for 2.5 oz) kind of weirds me out. I have no idea why.

That’s it! Another terrific box from Eco-Emi! If it wasn’t so expensive to maintain, I would continue the membership. I really hope and environmentally friendly box comes to Canada. That would be terrific!!

Have you received an Eco Emi box or something similar? What did you think about it?

Pretty Things : April Glossybox!

Hello lovelies!

As previously mentioned, I’m so behind with these posts! But I thought it was worth sharing. From March’s Glossybox post, I thought I’d update you on what I tried out so far. The Algemarin Foam Bath was fabulous! I really loved how the mineral salts were used. The foam also turned the water a gorgeous bright blue which was unexpected but a lovely surprise. I’m such a 12 year old when it comes to things like that.

I’m also really loving my Bailey Cosmetics Kabuki Brush although its weird to use a brush with such a short handle. I’m really loving the Pandora’s blush as well.  🙂

On to April’s Box:

1. Elizabeth Grant Skin Care Shower Gel
Full size!!: 240 ml – $20
This smells lovely. It’s not like every other vanilla scent. It’s a little more spicy. Cruelty-free.

2. Marcelle Xtension Plus Mascara
Full size!! $12.50
I was going to take a photo of the close up on the brush because I think that’s where this flops for me. I never have any luck with mascaras that have more of a comb than a brush. I think my lashes are too thin to handle putting so much on at once. They look like they’re soaking wet so it becomes a bit of a pain trying to thin them out. I think I like the formula of the mascara though. It’s the brush that doesn’t work for me. Cruelty-free.

3. Aveeno Positively Radiant Daily Moisturizer
Full size! $22.99
Woop! Another full size product! We’re spoiled! I’m generally not a fan of Aveeno products. They tend to irritate my skin so I think I’ll just save this for a future giveaway. 🙂

4. Wella Brilliance Conditioner & Treatment
Sample size Conditioner: 30 ml
Full size Conditioner: 250 ml / $13.99

Sample size Treatment : 25 mL
Full size Treatment: 150 mL $13.99

The conditioner & treatment smell nice but like any other conditioner (hope I’m not the only one who picks their hair products on scent!). The treatment is quite thick and I imagine would be great to leave in while you were soaking in the bath.

So that’s it! Glossybox is still my favourite box each month. Three FULL SIZE products! Can you believe it? I love receiving the box and feeling that it’s quite heavy. I also really like the boxes they come in. They’re very sturdy (in comparison to other boxes) and I know that they’ll last a long time.

What did you think of April’s Glossybox or May’s for that matter?  Did you get anything different in yours?

Pretty Things: April Glymm Box

I’m so far behind with my beauty box reviews (I’ve already received May’s Glymm!) and I nearly skipped this one. I thought I should have though for when I go back and compare month to month. So let’s crack on with it.

1. Free Your Mane Hydrating Shampoo & Conditioner
Sample size: 7.4 mL each
Full size: 300 mL ($16)
These kind of samples are a bit lame to me because you could get them in a magazine. However, I like that it is from a brand I don’t know. I also like that it’s sulfate, paraben and phalate free. I can’t see anything that confirms that its cruelty-free.

2. Mai Couture Social Gloss
Full size!! ($28)
The colour I received was Sake Sunrise. It’s a nude gloss and to be honest, I think it’s a little to dark for me. It kind of washes me out. I’ll try it in a couple of weeks when I’ve freckled a bit and see if that makes a difference. Love that it’s a full size product! I can’t find out if they’re cruelty-free.

3. $100 Gift Certificate to NuMe!
This is AWESOME!! I’m definitely going to use this. Even though I’ll have to pay a bit to get a hair straightener or curling rod, it’d still be less than I’d pay at Sally’s Beauty Supply. Very excited. I just can’t decide what to get.

4. Atelier Cologne in Orange Sanguine
Sample size: unsure, it’s the typical perfume sample size
Full size: 30 mL ($60) and 200 mL ($165)
I was a little disappointed with this at first but when I saw the full size price I understood why the sample was so small. Plus, it’s from a  company that I don’t know much about. I love the scent. It smells exactly like oranges. It’s a perfect light scent for spring although I’d be nervous to wear it when the wasps and mosquitos are out! No clue on its cruelty-free status.

5. Lucia Soap No. 6 (Wild Ginger & F resh Fig)
Sample size: 25g
Full size: Package of 8 soaps ($17.50)
This is a really fancy soap if 8 of them costs $17.50! I have to say that when I popped this soap out of the box, it didn’t feel like a regular bar of soap. It’s very creamy and made with 100% Organic Shea Butter. I haven’t tried it out yet, I feel like I have to keep it for best! lol. I checked out the website and there are a lot of options in this scent so I’m curious to see what else they have to offer. Cruelty-free.

Overall: Great box! Still really impressed with the brands that are included in Glymm.  I’m also super excited about the gift certificates. If you know anything about the cruelty-free status of the brands I’m unsure of please let me know.

Did you receive April’s Glymm box? What did you think?
